Stock futures were little changed as Wall Street braced for April's consumer price index. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 17 points, while S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures hovered near the flatline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.32%. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect the consumer price index to show a 0.4% monthly gain, or a 0.3% increase excluding food and energy. Tuesday's producer price index for April contributed to that narrative, showing a 0.5% gain in wholesale prices, above the 0.3% estimate from Dow Jones.

Cracks might finally be forming in the Federal Reserve's firm hawkish stance, according to Fundstrat Global Advisors' Tom Lee. As investors expected, the Fed kept interest rates unchanged after central bank policymakers had their meeting. "That's not really an inflationary signal, so I think the bar is actually being lowered now for the Fed to cut and I think that's something many people picked up." All in all, Lee thinks there's a "good probability" that interest rates are currently at their peak. If inflation does indeed improve in the next few months and interest rates fall, he has optimistic prospects for stocks.

Lee anticipates a positive setup for markets over the next 12 months, but views some signs of market fatigue in the near term after rallying for the better part of the last 16 weeks. Some investors have turned slightly cautious in recent sessions following hotter-than-expected reports on consumer and producer prices in January. However, Lee views the print as a reflection of "difficult seasonals" as companies lift prices in January, and expects the narrative to reverse course in February. Given this setup, Lee is urging investors sitting on cash to consider slowly dip their toes into the market during periods of weakness and remain "patient." "Patient money is really the money that's been working the last few years," he said.

Investors are embarking on a hectic week with key tech companies reporting and a big Federal Reserve meeting – and it could shape the next steps for the stock market's rally, said Fundstrat's Tom Lee. The surge in Big Tech helped carry the S&P 500 to a fresh record – and its first close above 4,900. "We were penciling in 5,000 [on the S&P 500], and we could maybe go higher," he said. "I do think we continue to be strong, but then after that, there's a big air pocket," Lee added. His year-end target for the S&P 500 is 5,200.

Since 1928, the S & P 500 has finished up 20% or more about 36% of the time. Yes, 2022 was down about 19%, but the S & P has posted declines of 10% or more only 12% of the time since 1928. Could the S & P gain 20% again in 2024? That run from 1995 to 1999 was certainly epic, but that was the last time the S & P 500 saw back-to-back 20% gains. Regardless, with the S & P 500 closing the year at 4,769, a 20% gain next year would mean the S & P would hit 5,722.

Fundstrat Global Advisors founder Tom Lee recently completed the quarterly rebalancing for his Granny Shots portfolio, a list of his top 36 stock picks which has consistently outperformed the market since its inception on Jan. 10, 2019. The Granny Shots portfolio, on the other hand, is up 157.3% in the same period, according to Fundstrat's website . This year alone, the Granny Shots portfolio's 19.33% rally has also outpaced the S & P 500's 13.9% gain. The portfolio takes its name from a style of underhanded shot in basketball that's considered to be highly efficient. Here are a few of the newest additions to Lee's Granny Portfolio.

The market recovery from last week's lows could be an indication that a market bottom is in place, according to Fundstrat Global Advisors. "While some might see this as 'jumping the gun,' I do feel like there's a good likelihood that Equity market lows could be in place after the constructive bounce in recent days," wrote Mark Newton, the firm's head of technical strategy. Newton pointed to several reasons for this, including: Strong tech returns relative to the S & P 500 . Bank of America's Stephen Suttmeier also noted that the fourth quarter is usually a good one for the S & P 500, increasing the likelihood of the broader market index doing well going forward. Going forward, the next test for the S & P 500 comes near the 4,400 to 4,450 range, as investors work their way through oversold conditions, according to Rob Ginsberg of Wolfe Research.
